What really puts M-S-P over the edge is just the intense brutality of the huge bodycount. Raping a girl while screaming obscenities in German? That’s the extra icing on the cake that M-S-P continuously brings to the table. Kudos to Palumbo for making the main character German as well, there’s just something about the language that adds an extra layer of creepiness. Although he threatens to go over the top once in a while, his performance is so intense and explosive, he manages to pull it off without losing that menacing, fearful hold on the audience. Played by Sven Garrett, I’m going to go on record as saying he is one of the scariest, most intimidating screen villains to come along in horror since Philippe Nahon in High Tension.

The film itself is a harrowing, disturbing look at the life of The Photographer, a German serial killer who spends his days photographing beautiful women, and his nights carving them to bloody chunks. The sound is also very good, with a 5.1 transfer and a great soundtrack by The Giallos Flame. The cinematography is top notch and the transfer is crisp and clean, allowing for some disturbingly detailed and intense moments. As mentioned before, the film is one of the most expensive of its kind, and it shows. It’s a breath of fresh air, to say the least, to see a film of this type look so damn sharp. Normally, films of this ilk are micro-budgeted, shot-on-video affairs with little to no skill besides the ability to gross you out. The first thing you notice when you pop in the film is how great it looks and sounds. But does the film live up to the hype? Is it really one of the most controversial and brutal films to ever come out of North America? Or is it an over-hyped disappointment like its predecessor Nutbag? To be fair, Palumbo has also done a fair share of self-promoting, with his “Murder-Set Street Team” grandstanding and promoting to virtually any magazine or website that would listen. The film has gained much notoriety over the past year, in part due to the circumstances surround the making of the film (it is the only film to get thrown out of 3 different processing labs: Technicolor, DuArt, and DeLuxe) and also due to the extreme, graphic nature of the film itself. He took them to court and decided to release his own version of the film on DVD, which is now available for sale on his website. They wanted to completely change the film, re-edit it, chop off 14 minutes of footage, put in a new voice-over, and so on. The problem began when the studio responsible for the film saw the final product that Palumbo presented to them, and started to panic. This film is the most expensive independent slasher film to ever come out of North America (budgeted at around $2 million), and seeing it in this form, you can see where every penny went. I had seen an edited, poor-quality version earlier this year, and wasn’t very impressed. Seeing the film as the director intended is definitely a revelation, I must say.

After trial and tribulation, Nick Palumbo’s controversial slasher opus Murder-Set-Pieces has arrived on DVD, in its original form, uncut and unedited. So without further ado, Horror Brain proudly presents this week’s Slasher Friday selection: And hey, what better way to kick off the weekend? Whatever the case may be, it is our duty, nay, our honor here at Horror Brain to pay homage to the slasher film each and every week, to showcase some of our favorite films, both new and old, from America’s beloved sub-genre. Or maybe we just like seeing naked bitches getting carved up nice and bloody. Perhaps it taps into a deep and profound sense of dread that permeates through the collective unconscious of the movie-going audience, giving us but a taste of our own dire mortality, a glimpse into the unpredictable and wholly inevitable face of death itself. Where would our beloved horror genre be without them? Over the years slasher flicks have been the staple for North American horror, with most of us growing up on a steady diet of the slashy goodness, for better or worse.īut what is it about slashers that appeals to such a broad audience? What is it about masked psychotics hiding in the bushes, waiting to slaughter the over-sexed, inebriated, nubile teenagers that captivates us so?
